The Positive Side [Short-story]
Whenever life throws arduous situations at you, what comes to your mind the next moment? Have you ever started wondering why this happened to you? If your answer is “Yes” then welcome to the cohort. Our minds tend to
naturally, make us think like that.
But, for a moment have you imagined how would it feel if you think about the same situation on a positive note? I can foresee a couple of you asking me how is it even possible to be positive when you are devastated? Are you able to?
I agree it is quite difficult being positive at times when you are weak. Chia in our story also felt the same way until she had this small chatter with her grandmother.
Chia hails from a very small town in the southern part of Kerala, and live with her grandmother right from her childhood. Her grandmother is usually her mate with whom she chatters once she is back from work. Like every other day, her grandma was eagerly waiting for her to be back home. She saw Chia from a distance walking up with a really tiresome face.
Chia waved at her grandma and silently entered their home without much enthusiasm. Her grandma figured that something was wrong with her. She waited for Chia to settle down. She then tried to strike a conversation with her granddaughter.
“Chia, how was your day at work? I was eagerly waiting for you to hear your tales”
Chia’s response to her grandma flabbergasted her, “Ammama, I lost the promotion which I was expecting for a very long period. My dreams to refurbish the house is all done and dusted now. Again for a year, it will be a struggle to meet our daily needs. Why is God doing this to me? Didn’t I toil hard for this?”
After a moment of silence, her grandma began to speak.
“Kanna Chia, I understand how hard this is for you. But, for a minute just imagine considering the upside of the same situation. You still have a job that feeds us. You still will have stories to tell me every evening. This little chatter that keeps us moving forward still stays. Most importantly, having this thought offers the greatest gift- your mental peace”
Chia felt awestruck for a second listening to her grandmother which lightened up her day. Most of us fail to look at the upside of things that happen in our life. I fall into this pool as well. Looking at the positive of the situations that life throws at us may not change or solve the problem but the ultimate purpose of life is perceived.
Being peaceful is the biggest gift that anyone can have in life. To have it all the time, it’s us who should mold our mind in such a way that it starts focusing only on the positive side. This is something I learned from Chia and her Grandmother. Like Chia do you also believe in the quote “Anything that happens, happens for the good”?
