I often have this habit of surfing through the internet during my leisure time. At one such instance, I came across the word Personal branding(PB). This immediately struck a memory and my mind began to playback. It was a conversation with my friend, who was a colleague of mine. He was narrating how an acquaintance of his became noticeable to the organisation unanticipated. The next minute I asked him, do you think it is vital to exhibit the work done to your associates within the company? , which finally took us to this phrase.

My notion, while I wanted to write about PB, was to make people knowledgeable about it.

What is Personal branding?

Believe it or not, we all have an identity created for ourselves. If you had wondered how? , look out for your name in Google and a series of information would have popped up. I am pretty sure most of us would have tried it as well. Likewise, all of us have a personal brand present in our workplace too. Intentionally or unintentionally, it is affecting our career day-in and day-out. The personal brand could be viewed as the behaviour or characteristics exhibited at the workplace. Typically, what people speak in your absence.

Until we had this conversation, I was a person who is generally not a fan of personalities who self-promote themselves at work. Also, I believe that our work should speak for us instead of us doing that. But, this thought was like an alert to my mind. When the company has a unique pitch set for themselves, which ideally helps to stand out from the group, it’s time that we realise the significance.

Performance and visibility are two things that sail parallel and equally contribute to our brand. Striving for visibility without action is like “all-foam and no beer”. Similarly, working hard and no one knowing your accomplishments is seating yourself under the radar.

“Everything you do either strengthens or dilutes the personal brand you’re trying to create

My next blog will talk about why it is essential and the different ways to build personal brand at work.
